2019 LAGC SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Congratulations to our 2019 LAGC Scholarship Winners,

Daniel Hurt and Trevor Cannavo

The 2019 LAGC Los Angeles Area College Scholarship was awarded to Daniel Hurt and Trevor Cannavo, who are horticulture students at Mt. San Antonio College, a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, CA.

Daniel Hurt and Trevor Cannavo have exhibited excellent academic achievement in their studies and have moving personal stories that show perseverance and hope.

Daniel is a veteran with two tours of duty in Iraq with the United States Army. He was injured as a result of his military experience and with the guidance and help of his wife and family, he found healing and his calling in horticulture at Mt. SAC. For Daniel, a scholarship means he will have access to additional books, tutoring and adaptive technologies that are not available through school or the Veterans Affairs Administration.

Trevor found his calling at Mt. SAC in horticulture with an emphasis in regenerative farming and sustainability in the study of soil and plant science. Trevor has had to deal with a severely incapacitating joint degeneration disease that put an end to his future plans and hopes for over ten years as he fought to control and overcome the disease. Trevor also found healing in being in horticulture, making things grow with his own hands. This scholarship means that he will be able to complete his degree.

It's like a rush that comes over me whenever I see a field of strawberries or a grove, or even something simple as a friend's backyard garden bed. It literally excites me - I don’t believe I chose this field, it was a calling - it chose me."
